As the 2027 Imo State governorship election rapidly approaches, political tension is mounting across the three Senatorial Zones, with aspirants from Okigwe and Orlu Zones making a strong push for the coveted seat.

However, the people of Owerri Zone, backed by the unwritten “Charter of Equity,” are firmly asserting that it is their turn to produce Governor Hope Uzodimma’s successor.

The gubernatorial contest promises to be a fiercely competitive one, with key political figures from diverse backgrounds positioning themselves for the top job.

The stakes are high, and the race is expected to intensify in the coming months.

Among the leading contenders are well-known names such as Chief Mike Ejiogu and Chief Ejike Chukwu, both influential businessmen with political aspirations.

Former Governor Sir Ikedi Godson Ohakim, who left a lasting legacy during his tenure, is also positioning himself as a key contender.

His “Clean and Green” initiative, which earned Imo State the title of the cleanest state in Nigeria, remains one of his most notable achievements.

Other prominent figures in the race include Sir Jude Ejiogu, former Secretary to the Imo State Government, and Mazi Mathew Chima Amadi (popularly known as Gburugburu), a businessman with significant political influence.

Chief Emeka Nkem Ihedioha, the immediate past Governor of Imo, and Ugwumba Uche Nwosu, a former gubernatorial candidate of the Action Alliance (AA), are also rumored to be eyeing the position.

The race also features Chief Collins Osuagwu, a well-known businessman, and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the current National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Additionally, former gubernatorial candidate Senator Ifeanyi Araraume, Chief Success Akagburuonye, a businessman, and Chief Longers Anyanwu, a former PDP party leader, are expected to throw their hats into the ring.

Stanley Amuchie, a former gubernatorial aspirant under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and Chief Charles Orie, the immediate past Managing Director of ISOPADEC, are also among the possible contenders.

Furthermore, Osita Izunaso, representing the Orlu Zone in the National Assembly, and Senators Athan Nneji Achonu and Ezenwa Onyewuchi, both currently serving in the National Assembly, are likely to play significant roles in the race.

At the heart of the current political debate is the demand from Owerri Zone for the implementation of the “Charter of Equity.”

This unwritten agreement, which was reportedly signed before Governor Uzodimma’s second-term bid, guarantees the rotation of the governorship seat between the three Senatorial Zones of the state.

According to this understanding, after the completion of Governor Uzodimma’s tenure, the governorship should shift to Owerri Zone.

The call for the power shift has been met with some resistance, with political stakeholders from other zones expressing varying opinions.

Despite this, the people of Owerri Zone have remained vocal in their demand for the fulfillment of the Charter, urging Governor Uzodimma to honor his pledge and ensure that the next governor comes from their zone.

One of the most prominent figures in the 2027 race is Sir Ikedi Godson Ohakim, whose tenure as Governor of Imo State is still remembered for its achievements, particularly the “Clean and Green” initiative.

His leadership style and the positive impact he had during his time in office have given him a strong political foothold. As a result, Ohakim is expected to be a major contender for the 2027 governorship seat.

As the 2027 election draws nearer, the political dynamics in Imo State are becoming increasingly fluid.

While the people of Owerri Zone are determined to produce Governor Uzodimma’s successor, the race remains wide open, with many potential candidates yet to declare their intentions.

Political observers believe that the upcoming election will be about more than just personal ambitions; it will also revolve around the successful implementation of the Charter of Equity.

The ability to build consensus and navigate the complex political landscape will be key to any candidate’s success.

For now, the people of Owerri Zone are resolute in their belief that they are well-positioned to take the lead in the next administration.

With a collective commitment to continuing the development of Imo State under the Shared Prosperity Administration, the zone is ready to make its case for the governorship.

As the 2027 election draws closer, the contest for Imo State’s top job will only intensify, and it remains to be seen how the balance of power between the zones will shape the future of the state.
