Ex-Imo NUJ Chairman, Osuagwu Calls On Gov.Uzodimma, Police Commissioner, Danjuma To Stopped Those Planing To Sale Union’s Property In Owerri
By Dan Opara
In a press release made available to the public, I, Ben Osuagwu, former Chairman of the Imo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), urgently call on the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma, and the Imo State Commissioner of Police to intervene in the ongoing malicious and unlawful attempt to sell the Imo NUJ Press Centre in Owerri.
The Imo NUJ Press Centre was established as a gift to journalists in the state by Commodore Amadi Ikwechegh, the former Military Governor of Imo State, during my tenure as Chairman.
The Centre, along with all its official documents and titles, has served as a symbol of the hard work and dedication of journalists in the region.
It is therefore deeply troubling to learn that a group of individuals, after receiving monetary compensation from certain parties, now claims the right to sell this important and historic facility.
Such a move is not only an outrageous act but also an insult to journalists in Imo State, as well as to the wider journalistic community across the country.
The Press Centre stands as the sole monument to journalists east of the Niger River, and it is vital that it is protected for the future of the profession.
If any individual or group wishes to sell a Press Centre, they should focus on those in their own state and not interfere with the heritage of Imo’s journalists.
It is unacceptable that certain individuals, simply because they hold positions of power, believe they can unilaterally make decisions that affect the welfare of others.
The era of such unchecked imperial authority has long passed.
I respectfully urge Governor Senator Hope Uzodinma and the Commissioner of Police to act swiftly in halting this illegal attempt.
It is my understanding that the matter is currently before the courts, and it would be prudent to allow the legal process to take its course without any further interference.
If those involved have received funds from interested parties, they should be held accountable and return the money rather than continue with these reckless actions.
We, the journalists of Imo State, categorically reject any plans to sell the Imo NUJ Press Centre.
I trust that Governor Uzodinma will take all necessary steps to prevent this criminal act from taking place during his tenure.
Ben Osuagwu,
Former Chairman, Imo State NUJ.
