Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has called on media professionals to uphold the principles of fairness, accuracy, and integrity, urging them to combat the growing menace of fake news. Speaking at the 2024 Triennial Conference of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) held in Owerri, the Governor underscored the media's critical role as the bedrock of democracy and a custodian of truth.

In his keynote address, Governor Uzodimma highlighted the need for enhanced fact-checking mechanisms to counter misinformation, stressing the media’s responsibility to promote social cohesion. "Journalists must not only act as watchdogs but also as custodians of truth," he stated.

The Governor also shared a major achievement for the state, announcing a $4 million award from the World Bank. He attributed the recognition to Imo State’s developmental strides, describing it as evidence of significant progress. He encouraged the press to balance their investigative reporting with stories of success and positive change.

Addressing the dangers of fake news, Uzodimma recounted personal experiences with fabricated stories aimed at damaging his reputation and inciting unrest. He referenced a forged ThisDay newspaper front page falsely accusing him of ordering inter-ethnic marriages and another baseless claim that the state was exporting natural gas overseas. "These malicious stories are not just attacks on individuals—they threaten social cohesion and undermine public trust," he warned.

Outgoing NUJ President Chris Isiguzo, in his valedictory speech, commended Governor Uzodimma for his leadership and hospitality in hosting the conference. He praised the peaceful atmosphere in Imo State, countering negative narratives about the region. "Contrary to the negative narratives, Imo State is not only safe but has extended unmatched warmth to all delegates. Your leadership, Governor Uzodimma, is a testament to the state’s stability and progress," Isiguzo said.

The conference concluded with a renewed commitment from journalists to uphold ethical standards and contribute to national development while combating the scourge of fake news.
