DISCOVERING A UMUOKA: A HIDDEN GEM IN IMO STATE NIGERIA.


 


 




Nestled in the heart of the Amakohia-Ubi community in the Umunwoha region of Owerri West LGA, Imo State, Nigeria, lies the vibrant town of Umuoka. This town, often referred to as Okacity or Small London, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage and communal spirit of the Igbo people. Umuoka is divided into four villages, each with its unique characteristics and traditions. The first village is UMUBE, named after the first son. UMUELEM, named after the second son, is the second village. The third village is UMUORIEKAFOR, named after the third son. The fourth village, UMUORJI, was born by UMUBE, making Umuoka a town of four children. This division is not just geographical but also traditional, with each village sharing everything that comes to Umuoka, from one to four.

UMUBE, the first village, is known for its leadership role in the community. As the first son, UMUBE holds a significant position in the traditional hierarchy of Umuoka. The village is known for its vibrant community life and its commitment to upholding the traditions and customs of the town.

UMUELEM, the second village, is known for its peaceful ambiance and its commitment to education and knowledge. The village is home to several schools and educational institutions, making it a hub for learning and intellectual growth in Umuoka.

UMUORIEKAFOR, the third village, is known for its agricultural prowess. The village is home to several farms and agricultural enterprises, contributing significantly to the food supply and economic growth of Umuoka.

UMUORJI, the fourth village, is a testament to the unity and communal spirit of Umuoka. Born by UMUBE, UMUORJI is a symbol of the interconnectedness and shared heritage of the people of Umuoka.

Umuoka is a part of the larger Amakohia-Ubi community, which is also divided into four children: OBIOKWU, UMUNJAM, UMUIKE, and UMUOKA. This division further emphasizes the importance of community and shared heritage in the Igbo culture.

Umuoka, with its vibrant community life, rich cultural heritage, and commitment to education and agriculture, is a hidden gem in Imo State. The town is a testament to the resilience, unity, and communal spirit of the Igbo people. The vibrant culture of Umuoka Amakohia-Ubi is beautifully showcased in their annual OKOROSHA OWU OMA festival, celebrated from December to January. This dance festival is a joyous occasion, a testament to their rich cultural heritage. Umuoka, also known as Okacity or small London, represents Ama-Ubi at a cultural level in Umunwoha. 

Amakohia-Ubi also has its own unique cultural celebrations, with the OKOROSHI OWU OMA festival taking place from June to July. This highlights the diversity of the region, with two distinct cultural celebrations taking place each year. These festivals are a wonderful opportunity to experience the rich traditions and customs of the Umuoka Amakohia-Ubi community.

The deceased, a mother and her son, were identified as residents of the neighboring Irete Autonomous Community, Umunwoha, Owerri-West.  The victims were reportedly kidnapped by Fulani herdsmen several weeks ago and were tragically killed two days ago in Amakohia-Ubi.
