Former Governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas Okorocha, has appealed to the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), as a tribute to the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

Speaking during a night of tribute held in Ubah’s honour on Monday at the Nigerian Air Force Conference & Suites in Abuja, Okorocha referenced Ubah’s earlier plea for Kanu’s release. He noted that the late President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, had made a similar appeal before his passing.

“Before Iwuanyanwu’s death, he called on the Federal Government to consider releasing Nnamdi Kanu. Ifeanyi Ubah, before his demise, echoed this sentiment,” Okorocha stated. He urged Senate President Godswill Akpabio to relay this message to the government, emphasizing that the release would promote unity among the Igbo people.

Okorocha continued, “My brother, Senate President, convey this message on behalf of Ndi Igbo gathered here: the most fitting way to honour these great men is to release Nnamdi Kanu. This gesture will allow the Igbos to reunite and foster peace.”

Addressing the state of division within the Igbo community, Okorocha called for reconciliation and unity, urging the people to move beyond political rivalries. Reflecting on the legacy of past Igbo leaders, he remarked, “The spirits of our great leaders like Ojukwu and Ekwueme are undoubtedly convening in the afterlife, discussing the future of Ndi Igbo. Their question remains: ‘Why do Igbos play the politics of division and hate?’”

Okorocha concluded by urging the Igbo people to honor the memory of their late leaders by embracing peace, unity, and mutual respect.
